Tomorrow we mark the milestone; today, let the month gather itself into one page.
October began by renaming everything that happens to you: catalyst — sparks without fixed meaning, a curriculum designed with your consent, delivered first to the mind, then to the faithful ledger of the body, never wasted, patiently re-offered until received, and hidden equally in joy. Then the veil: the deliberate forgetting that makes choices costly and therefore real, faith possible, freedom safe, and every life a true beginning — a curtain that thins, nightly, exactly enough to remind you that you are accompanied.
Then the hard week. Suffering as catalyst at full intensity — never meaningless, though never glib; the fork of processed and unprocessed pain; attention as the fire; the far shore from which the steepest passages gleam; the honest map of where unfaced pain goes when it chooses power; the reverence owed to another’s mountain; and limitation itself as the banks that give the river force.
And finally the master key: acceptance, rescued from resignation — the deep yes extended to the moment, to the mirror of the other, and hardest of all, to the struggling student in the mirror of the bathroom. Gratitude before understanding. Slowness allowed. The whole assembled into the heart’s own alchemy: lead, vessel, fire, solvent, gold.
One sentence, if you keep only one: nothing that happens to you is meaningless, and everything — met with the deep yes — is workable. That sentence, lived, is October.
