There is an advanced practice that sounds, at first hearing, almost unreasonable: giving thanks for catalyst before you understand it. Not after the lesson resolves and the gift becomes visible — years later, from the far shore — but now, in the fog, while it still only hurts.

Ordinary gratitude is retrospective bookkeeping: the good is identified, then thanked. Lovely, and limited — it leaves you waiting, sometimes decades, for hindsight to release each experience’s meaning before you can receive it. The practice this teaching points toward runs on different fuel entirely: it thanks the experience on trust, the way you might thank a teacher on the first day of a course you cannot yet follow — not because the content is clear, but because you trust the school.

Something remarkable happens in the mechanics of that gesture. Resistance and gratitude cannot fully occupy the same moment; the thank-you, even said through gritted teeth, loosens the whole clenched apparatus of no. And catalyst met without resistance, this month has shown us over and over, processes at astonishing speed. Gratitude-before-understanding is not sentiment. It is a solvent — arguably the fastest one there is. Often understanding, which the mind was straining after, arrives quietly on its own once the thanking has softened the ground; comprehension turns out to have been waiting behind the resistance the whole time.

Begin absurdly small — thank the red light, the rain on the day of the picnic. The muscle built on trifles will hold, someday, considerably more.

☕ Today’s Micro-Practice: Three times today, thank something unwelcome at the moment it arrives — “thank you, teacher, whatever this is” — and notice what the sentence does to your grip.
