After a week in the machinery of lessons and friction, a correction is due — because catalyst has a second half that seekers routinely forget: joy is also catalyst.

The teaching does not say growth requires suffering. It says growth requires experience — and beauty, delight, laughter, and love are experiences of the highest potency. A moment of real awe cracks the self open at least as effectively as a crisis, and rather more pleasantly. The sources speak of learning through ecstasy as well as through pain; it is we who developed the strange habit of taking only our difficulties seriously, filing joy under “break from the curriculum” rather than “curriculum.”

But consider what joy actually does when you let it all the way in. It dismantles, for a moment, the clenched project of being a separate, defended self. It teaches — without a single word — what the unity of all things feels like from the inside. This is study of the deepest kind, disguised as a very good afternoon.

There is even a discipline here, subtle and mostly unpracticed: to use joy rather than merely consume it. The difference is attention. Pleasure skimmed and scrolled past leaves little; the same pleasure received consciously — felt fully, followed all the way down, thanked — becomes transformative. Held that way, a piece of music, a child’s laugh, an October morning is not a pause in the work.

It is the work, wearing its festival clothes.

☕ Today’s Micro-Practice: Once today, catch a small pleasure in the act — the first sip, warm water on your hands — and stay with it for three full breaths, receiving it as deliberately as you would study a difficult lesson.
