September gave us the map: who you are, why you are here, and the one great choice this life exists to offer. October hands you the tool the map was drawn for. This month we look at catalyst — the material’s name for everything that happens to you.
The word is borrowed from chemistry, and the borrowing is precise. A catalyst is a substance that sparks a transformation without being part of the final product. In the same way, the events of your life — the diagnosis, the compliment, the traffic jam, the inheritance — are not themselves the point. They are sparks. They arrive carrying no fixed meaning at all, only potential. What they become depends entirely on what you do with them.
This is the quietly radical claim at the heart of this month: nothing merely happens to you. In the deepest sense, everything is offered for you — raw material presented to a soul that came here precisely in order to work with it. The universe, in this teaching, is not an indifferent weather system you shelter from. It is a curriculum, designed with terrifying generosity, in which every single experience — wanted or unwanted, tiny or shattering — is usable.
That does not mean everything feels good. October will not pretend so; we will spend a full week with suffering itself. But it means nothing is meaningless. And a life in which nothing is meaningless is a different life, starting this morning.
☕ Today’s Micro-Practice: Today, when something small goes wrong — a delay, an interruption — try greeting it silently: “Spark received. What are you for?” You don’t need the answer yet. Just practice the greeting.
