If both paths eventually lead home, you might reasonably ask: then why choose at all? Why not stay comfortably in the middle, a decent person who never gets too intense about anything? The material gives a gently bracing answer. The one place you cannot stay forever is the fence.
Our density is the density of choice, and its single graduating lesson is precisely that — to choose. To make a true polarization, in one direction or the other, toward love of others or mastery of self. The being who never really decides, who drifts in a lukewarm neutrality of mild kindness and mild selfishness, has not yet learned the lesson this whole school exists to teach. Such a being is not punished; it is simply not yet ripe. It will, with great love, be offered the lesson again.
This is oddly liberating. It means the spiritual life is not about achieving flawless behavior or never making mistakes. It is about committing — about actually pointing your heart somewhere and meaning it. A wholehearted, imperfect lover of others is far further along than a careful, tepid fence-sitter. The universe is not asking you to be perfect. It is asking you to stop hedging, and to choose.
